The Gospel is very simply Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was sent into the world as a human being born to the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is both God and man. He was sent into the world to reveal the nature of God, save sinners and restore us to the loving relationship with God we were created to enjoy. He fulfilled the law of God on behalf of you and I who break it every day. As the perfect sinless Son of God he perfectly met all the requirements of God’s law. He was thus qualified to be our advocate. He is God’s perfect man and man’s perfect God.
He was delivered over to death upon a wooden cross; a sacrifice made to satisfy the wrath of God for sinners. He paid the debt owed for sin; a debt He didn’t owe, a debt we could not pay. All our sins were legally transferred onto him there. He who knew no sin, God made to be sin for us that we might become acceptable to God. In this way God demonstrated His love for us.
After 3 days Jesus Christ rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven and is now seated at the right hand of God the Father.
Whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. To call upon the Lord Jesus Christ is to look away from your sin, yourself, your religion, your church, your baptism, your church membership and all of your good works and look exclusively to the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved from the penalty and the power of sin.
There is nothing we can do to save ourselves. We are saved by the kindness of God through faith only. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me”. God also says, “There is salvation in no other name for there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved” and “There is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.”
When by simple faith, we turn to Jesus Christ and away from our sin and ourselves, we are forgiven of all our sins. Jesus Christ reconciles sinful man to Holy God. It was as if He took sinful man in one hand and Holy God in the other hand and brought the two together through His death.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ being acquitted of our offenses against God. Where once we were enemies of God, we are now reconciled to him. Instead of facing eternal punishment in hell we look forward to everlasting peace with God in heaven.
